Line Illuminator

As he pushes open the gate and passes up the wide white walk he sees a flutter of female garments; his wife, looking fresh and cool and sweet, steps down from the veranda to meet him. At the bottom of the steps she stands waiting, with a smile of ineffable joy, an attitude of matchless grace and dignity. (Chapter #3 page 19)

This was the first hint I caught that something was a little off in the story. I did not know what yet but something wasn't quite right. I don't know about you guys but if my husband just barely escaped a hanging, was shot at, and injured I wouldn't be so calm and just stand there. Her calm composure was a result of his imagination. He was imagining her how he wanted to see her, not how she would be in reality. Was this a red flag for anyone else or just me;) ?

  1. Wow that’s very interesting!! I agree with you that that’s how his dying brain imagines her, full of life and happy, as a last goodbye.

  2. I did thought it was kinda a weird response. However, I thought that it was possible that Payton had talked to his wife. So, when he "returned" home, she could have been proud, causing her to be calm.

    1. Oo interesting, Peyton’s wife could have been in on his plan to sabotage the enemy, so when he returned from his mission, that might explain her being proud.

    2. Exactly, but, I also agree with Ethan, that it would be hard to be smiley when you see someone you love to be in so much pain.

  3. This was the biggest clue in my opinion. As soon as she was standing there all composed and stuff, it made no sense to me. Considering the fact that Peyton's neck was swollen and had a big black mark on it, and was also sticking his swollen tongue out of his mouth, I doubt that any woman would be able to smile at him while waiting patiently for him to arrive.

  4. What are some of the other strange things Farquhar sees & hears that could tip us off that this is all very unreal?

    1. It's really weird because Peyton hears a multitude of whispers that he can't understand, as well as sees as starry sky that doesn't look familiar to him. The weirdest thing for me is that one moment he's walking along the dark woods under the starlight, and the next he's at his home with the morning sunshine making everything beautiful. Peyton believes that he fell asleep while walking but there's no way he could've gotten home while sleepwalking through the woods at night.
